Home LEGACY P - Z Shaw

Shaw University is a very special private HBCU in the heart of Raleigh, North Carolina. Often referred to as the "mother of African American colleges in North Carolina," Shaw is deemed so due to that fact that the founder of North Carolina Central University and the first presidents of Elizabeth City State and NC A&T Universities were all Shaw graduates. The school was established in 1865 by Henry Martin Tupper, a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. Since his school was the first HBCU in the South, the Raleigh Institute helped pave the way for a great way HBCUs that came after it. It was the first historically Black college in the United States to allow female students and the first to offer a four-year medical program.
