The West Tennessee State Normal School, as it was initially named, was established in 1909 and first opened its doors in 1912. As it grew, the school underwent three more name changes before becoming the University of Memphis in 1994. In the early 1900s, students chose blue and gray as the official school colors to symbolize the unity of the North and the South post-Civil War. The colors together embodied a union on the campus among students as well.
In 1959, Memphis admitted its first Black students, who were known as the Memphis State Eight. In a time of intense racial segregation, their presence on campus was scrutinized by the media and general public. Restrictions were placed on them as safety precautions and to maintain a sense of calm of campus, however, the lens on them shifted over time. They played a crucial role in the school's history, and more Black students began to enroll as the year went on. Now, African American and Black students make up 1/3 of the campus student body.
