Amy Sherald: The HBCU Alumna Reimagining Black Portraiture
HBCUs have long served as vital incubators for Black artistic expression, intellectual thought, and cultural innovation. Beyond providing educational opportunities, they have cultivated generations of artists, writers, musicians, and creatives whose work has shaped American culture and challenged dominant narratives. Through art departments, mentorship, and environments that affirm Black identity and history, HBCUs have empowered artists to explore new visual languages and perspectives.
This journey is reflected in the career of artist Amy Sherald, whose path to becoming one of the most influential contemporary painters of her generation included her studies at Clark Atlanta University and painting courses at Spelman College.

A graduate of Clark Atlanta University who further developed her artistic practice through painting courses at Spelman College, Amy Sherald later earned her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Sherald gained international recognition in 2018 when the National Portrait Gallery unveiled her groundbreaking portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama.

Her work is distinguished by its vivid color palettes and portrayals of Black subjects with grayscale skin, a stylistic choice that shifts attention away from race as a physical marker and toward the individuality of each sitter. Set against bold, simplified backgrounds, her figures confront viewers with a sense of presence, confidence, and humanity. Through these portraits, Sherald explores themes of identity, representation, and belonging while challenging the historical absence of Black subjects within Western art. Her paintings offer a powerful reimagining of portraiture that celebrates the richness, complexity, and everyday beauty of Black life.

The High Museum of Art in Atlanta has joined the national tour of Amy Sherald’s acclaimed mid-career retrospective, the largest exhibition of her work to date. Featuring a wide range of paintings created between 2007 and 2024, the exhibition showcases many of Sherald’s most iconic works alongside rarely seen pieces that trace the evolution of her artistic practice over the course of her career. If you're in Atlanta, be sure to visit the museum and experience this remarkable exhibition firsthand.
