Founded and named in honor of Lee Claflin in 1869, Claflin University was the first to offer quality higher education for everyone "regardless of race, complexion, or religious opinion" in South Carolina. The Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Alonzo Webster as the school's first president, where he also acted as a professor of systematic theology and moral and mental philosophy, and chief fundraiser. Webster helped secure state funding through the establishment of the South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Institute on Claflin's campus in 1872. He soon after resigned with the Rev. Dr. Edward Cooke taking his place. With Cooke on board, Claflin's fiscal challenges were resolved and the campus saw increased enrollment. By 1879, the institution was issuing its first honorary degrees. Now, Dr. Henry N. Tisdale is president of over 2,000 students. The Claflin Panthers community is a tight-knit family, which is one of the many reasons why we love this HBCU.
